Anchor bolts for mechanical fixing in concrete

An anchor bolt fixes a structure mechanically into concrete. You drill a hole, set the anchor and tighten the nut. A cone or a segment then presses the sleeve against the wall of the hole and the clamping force builds.

There are three main forms. A through bolt passes through the part being fixed and is the logical choice when the component already hangs in place. A rapid-action anchor sets quickly one after another and suits repetitive work. A segment anchor expands against the hole wall with one or more segments and takes high tensile loads.

Choose on hole diameter and embedment depth, and on the load the joint will carry. For outdoor work or a wet room, take a stainless version rather than electrolytically galvanised steel, because there corrosion decides the life of the joint and not the tensile capacity.

In masonry, in a hollow substrate, or under heavy load close to an edge, a mechanical anchor is not always the right answer. Work there with an anchor rod combined with injection mortar.
