Voltage testers for a quick check on site

A voltage tester is the tool you reach for before you touch an installation. It shows without contact, or through a single pole, whether a conductor is still live, so no cover has to come off and no wire has to be pierced. Non-contact detectors work up to 1000V AC and give both a light and a sound as soon as they pick up a field, which is enough for a quick check on cabling, sockets, distribution boards and light fittings.

Detection range is the first thing to compare. Versions that start at 12V AC pick up weak signals as well, while types that respond only from 90V give fewer false alarms in rooms full of electrical noise. Where there is an explosion risk, choose an EX protected version. A built-in torch saves time in crawl spaces and meter cupboards, and a second detection level separates proximity from direct contact. Units running on AAA batteries are quick to swap, so keep a spare set in the case.

A tester does not replace a measurement. Screen with it first, then confirm the reading with an instrument from the analogue measuring instruments, and keep a tape measure beside it for setting the work out.
