Guide rails for straight, splinter-free saw cuts

A guide rail holds the saw on a fixed line, so the cut stays straight over the full length of a panel and the sawn edge can be glued without further dressing. The aluminium profile sits on anti-slip strips against the workpiece, the base of a plunge saw drops into the groove, and the rubber splinter guard marks exactly where the teeth break through. Lay that lip on the marked line and cut without setting anything else out.

Choose the length for the work. A short rail around 0.8 m suits doors, cabinet sides and stair strings. A 1.4 m rail covers half a sheet and still fits in the back of a van. For a full sheet in one continuous pass, work with a longer rail or join two rails with connectors, and check that the base runs through the joint without a step, because the smallest kink shows up over the whole cut.

Finally, check compatibility. Festool, Bosch, Metabo, Makita, DeWalt, Milwaukee and HiKOKI do not all use the same rib and groove dimensions, so match rail and saw base before you order. If you always work in the same place, a stand keeps the panel at working height.
