Insulation resistance testers for testing insulation
An insulation resistance tester checks whether the insulation of cables, motors and installations still offers enough resistance and allows no dangerous leakage currents. The instrument applies a high test voltage and measures the resistance in megohms, so you spot ageing, moisture or damage before they lead to a short circuit or failure. Electricians, panel builders and maintenance technicians use them at handover, during periodic inspection and when tracing faults.
The choice depends on the test voltage you need: lighter models test to 1000 V for common low-voltage installations, while heavier versions go up to several kilovolts for motors and high-voltage cables. Also look at the measuring range, the memory function and whether the instrument also measures voltage and continuity, so one tool covers several checks. A stable test voltage and a clear reading make the difference in borderline cases.
Always test on a de-energised installation and discharge the cable afterwards. Pick an insulation resistance tester whose test voltage matches the installations you inspect and hand over day to day.
