Filling compounds for repair and finishing

A filling compound closes holes, cracks and unevenness so the substrate is flat and load-bearing again. What you need follows from the material underneath, the layer thickness you have to bridge and the load the repair takes afterwards.

For small defects a paste filler is enough. It is light, sands quickly and takes paint without a detour, and plasterboard fillers sit in this group. For metal, concrete and floors that carry real force, a two-component epoxy or an epoxy mortar is the right call. It bonds chemically, barely shrinks and can be drilled, tapped and sanded once cured. With a two-component product, allow for the working time, because the pace is fixed the moment the parts are mixed.

Adhesion starts with preparation. Degrease, remove loose material and key a smooth surface. Build deep holes up in layers rather than in one pass, otherwise the core cures more slowly than the outside and the repair splits open later.

Damp substrates call for damp-proofing first, and bare steel is logically finished with a zinc paint.
