Folding rules for measuring without a second hand

A folding rule measures where a tape measure gives up. It stands up on its own, so you measure alone across an opening, along a ceiling or into a corner without the blade sagging. The standard is a length of 2 m in ten parts of 20 cm, with a blade width around 15 mm.

The material decides the behaviour. Wood stays light and breaks sooner than it bends, plastic is less sensitive to moisture and holds its size on a wet surface. Look at the hinges as well, because that is where the accuracy sits. One with stiff hinges stays where you set it, a worn one sags and therefore measures short.

Accuracy class III is enough for most construction and assembly work. Wiha, Sola, Stanley, Stabila, Milwaukee, Facom, Festool and Bosch supply the common versions, in high visibility colours that you find again in a full tool bag. Over longer distances a tape measure stays quicker, and the wider range of analogue measuring instruments follows on.
