Adjustable spanners with a central nut

An adjustable spanner takes over the work of a whole set of open-ended spanners with a single tool. The jaw runs steplessly with the nut size through a central nut, which makes it usable on assembly work where the sizes are not known in advance: pipework, steel construction, machine maintenance and call-outs away from the workshop. Choose on length and jaw opening first, because those two together set the reach and the torque you can put in.

Short versions around 218 mm work comfortably in tight space, while models up to 770 mm give the leverage for large nuts up to 85 mm. A thin jaw passes alongside flanges and between pipes where a wide jaw jams. A wide jaw spreads the load over more material and rounds off the corners of a nut less quickly. Look as well at the finish and the grip. Phosphated steel resists corrosion, a rubber handle helps over a long shift, and a reversible jaw speeds up repetitive work.

For fixed sizes and deeper bolts, look at nut driver or pin key.
