Shaft seals for sealing rotating shafts

A shaft seal keeps lubricant in and dirt, dust and moisture out at the point where a rotating shaft passes through a housing. Without a good seal, grease or oil leaks away and contamination enters the bearing or gear housing, leading to wear and failure. Radial shaft seals consist of a spring-loaded rubber lip that runs tight against the shaft and keeps the gap closed permanently, even at high speeds.

Machine builders and maintenance technicians replace them when overhauling pumps, motors and transmissions. When choosing, look at the shaft diameter, the bore diameter of the housing and the width of the seal, because all three measurements have to match exactly. The lip material matters too: it must withstand the temperature and the media it contacts.
