Oil seals, V-rings and cassette seals for shafts

Within seals sealing rings close the space between a rotating shaft and the housing around it: the lubricant stays in, water and dust stay out. The radial shaft seal, called an oil seal on the shop floor, is the most used form and is identified by three dimensions, for example 22 x 28 x 4 mm.

Movement and load decide the type. A V-ring turns with the shaft and works as a pre-seal against splash water. A cassette seal packs several lips into one closed unit and is meant for heavily contaminated environments where separate lips do not last. Piston seals and U-cup seals belong to hydraulics and pneumatics, where pressure rather than speed forms the load. Wiper seals sit on the outside and scrape dirt off the rod before it is drawn in.

Look at the build of the ring as well. A double metal housing gives stiffness in a wide recess, an extra non-contact lip holds dirt back without adding friction, and rings are specified for oil or for grease. That distinction sets the material and the lip shape, so carry it over when you replace one.
