Seals for rolling bearings and bearing housings

Seals keep grease inside a bearing arrangement and keep water, dust and swarf out, which decides how long the bearing actually lasts. On a well-sealed shaft the grease film stays clean; once contamination gets past, pitting starts and the bearing fails well before its rated life.

Match the seal to the housing and the shaft, not just to the bore. A single lip suits clean indoor drives at moderate speed, four-lip designs hold up in wet or dusty conditions, and felt strips handle slow, greasy shafts where a rubber lip would drag or burn. Shaft diameters run from a few millimetres up to around 140 mm, so measure the shaft, the housing bore and the seat width before ordering, because something that is right on two of those three will still leak.

Check the lip direction and the running surface finish when fitting, and renew the seals whenever a bearing is changed. Part of the rolling bearings range, alongside bearing units and housings that arrive sealed as an assembly.
