Lip seals and housing seals for bearing housings

A seal around a rolling bearing keeps the grease in and keeps water, dust and dirt out. Once it fails the lubricant is contaminated and the bearing runs hot within a few hours of service. What is covered here are the rings and sleeves that sit between shaft and bearing housing, not the flat gaskets between two mating faces. Everything sits under seals.

Choose on the three dimensions printed on every ring: inside diameter, outside diameter and width, for example 45 x 100 x 6 mm. If one of the three is off the ring does not close, so it either leaks or runs hot. For bearing housings there are housing seals that drop into the recess of the housing, and lip seals that run on the shaft with one or more lips.

The number of lips follows the environment. A four-lip seal gives extra certainty where dust and splash water are constant, while a lip seal with an internal gap seal combines a non-contact and a contact seal in one ring. When replacing, check the running track on the shaft: a worn groove destroys a new lip in a short time, however well the ring itself fits.
