Choosing a radial bearing by load, speed and fit

A radial bearing carries load perpendicular to the shaft, which covers the great majority of rotating arrangements in gearboxes, pumps, fans, conveyors and electric motors. Type follows the duty. Deep groove ball bearings run fast and quiet and take a modest thrust component alongside the radial load.

Cylindrical roller bearings raise radial capacity sharply and allow axial float in one seat of a two-seat arrangement. Tapered roller bearings and angular contact ball bearings suit combined loads and are set in opposed pairs. Spherical roller bearings tolerate shaft misalignment and housing deflection that would overload a rigid type at the edge of the raceway.

Needle roller bearings buy capacity in a shallow radial section where space is tight. Beyond type, specify the seal or shield, the internal clearance class against the interference fit and running temperature, and the cage material for the speed. These sit under the wider rolling bearings range; pair them with bearing units and housings for pillow block builds, or move to axial types where thrust dominates.
