Marking out tools for wood, metal and construction
Tracing is the step that puts the dimension from the drawing onto the workpiece, and the accuracy of everything after it depends on that line. A pencil line half a millimetre wide is still defensible on timber; on metal it is not. There a scriber with a carbide tip cuts a thin, sharp line that does not smudge and stays visible under oil or dust.
For long straight lines across a floor, a sheet or a wall, a chalk line reel is faster than any measuring instrument: unroll, tension, snap. Reels of 30 m are the standard, with blue powder for temporary lines and red for lines that have to stay. Dividers and surface gauges set out parallel lines and circles from a reference face, and a contour gauge copies an irregular profile so a skirting board or a panel is cut right first time.
Choose on the surface and on the precision the job asks for, and on whether the line still has to be readable after machining. The full range sits under scribing tools.
