Scribers for marking out on steel, stone and hard surfaces

A scriber cuts a fine, permanent line into steel, stone, plastic and painted surfaces where a pencil mark would rub off or sit too wide to work to. Tip material sets the job: hardened steel points handle general workshop marking and can be resharpened, while carbide holds an edge on hardened stock, castings and abrasive stone. Bodies around 150 mm suit bench work and sit in a breast pocket, and longer versions give reach into recesses and box sections.

Look for a knurled or multi-component grip that stays controllable with oily hands, a pocket clip if the tool travels, and a replaceable point so a blunted tip does not retire the whole tool. Some versions carry a second bent point for working against a rule or template from awkward angles.
