Electric nibblers for cutting sheet metal
A nibbler punches a continuous line of small crescents out of sheet metal, so it follows a curve or an internal cut-out without distorting the panel and without the heat discolouration a grinder leaves behind. The edge comes off clean enough to weld or fold straight away, which is why the tool is a fixture on ventilation ducting, cladding, trailer bodies and stainless fabrication.
Capacity is the first decision. Compact machines take around 1.6 mm in mild steel from a 350W motor and are light enough to run one-handed along a marked line, while heavier machines push into 5 mm plate and need both hands and a supported panel. Rated capacity always drops in stainless, so read the stainless figure rather than the mild steel headline.
Start an internal cut from a drilled pilot hole and let the tool feed itself instead of forcing it. Nibblers belong to the cutting and bending group; where a straight edge is all you need, a sheet metal shear is quicker and leaves no swarf.
