Rasps with handles in coarse and medium cut

Rasps, listed here as graters, take material out of wood, plastic and soft materials far faster than a file does, because the cut is made of separate raised teeth instead of continuous grooves. That clears the chip instead of clogging straight away.

Shape decides the work. A flat hand rasp levels and finishes edges, a half-round rasp does the same on its flat face and follows hollow recesses on its curved one, and a cabinet rasp has a finer tooth for model work where the finish already counts.

A coarse cut brings the piece roughly to shape, a medium cut goes over that shape before you move on to abrasive. Length matters too. Short, 140 to 190 mm, steers accurately in small work, while 250 to 350 mm follows a straight face better and takes more off per stroke.

A handle is not a luxury on a rasp, because the force runs straight down the tang. For complete assortments look at the sets, and for smoothing back work on with scrapers.
