Fibre discs for sanding and deburring metal

A fibre disc is an abrasive disc with grain on a vulcanised fibre backing, mounted on a backing pad under an angle grinder. It is the tool for heavy preparation on metal: levelling weld seams, taking off burrs, removing rust and mill scale, and keying surfaces for welding or coating. The disc works at a slight angle, so only part of the surface cuts and the heat put into the workpiece stays limited.

Choose the diameter on your machine first. Versions of 115 and 125 mm are manageable and easy to control, while 180 and 230 mm remove material faster but ask for a heavier grinder. The bore, usually 22 mm, has to fit the backing pad. Grit comes next. Coarse grades around 36 take material off quickly and leave a clear pattern, while 60 and finer work more precisely and prepare for polishing.

Grain type counts for more than the price per disc: ceramic grain fractures to a fresh edge as it works, lasts longer on stainless steel and keeps the workpiece cooler. Check the backing pad for wear. For work in profiles and on round parts, look at sanding roll and cup brush.
