Digital calipers for precision measurement

A caliper is the fastest way to take an outside, inside, depth or step measurement on the shop floor without setting up a bench instrument. Digital models read to 0.01 mm, hold an absolute scale that keeps its origin after switch-off, and convert between metric and imperial in one press, which removes the reading errors that come with a vernier scale under poor light.

Measuring ranges start at 150 mm for general fitting work and run through 200, 300, 450 and 600 mm up to 1000, 1500 and 2000 mm for weldments and large housings. Long beams need support at both ends and a light, repeatable touch on the jaws, so check jaw depth as well as range before ordering. Where readings feed an inspection report or a control chart, choose a version with data output rather than transcribing by hand. For wet or chip-heavy environments, a sealed housing resists coolant splash and swarf. Part of the digital measuring instruments range, next to bench references such as a pressure calibrator.
