Vernier depth gauges for holes, grooves and steps

A vernier depth gauge measures the depth of bores, grooves, counterbores and steps. The bridge rests on the face of the workpiece, the beam drops into the hole and you read the value straight off the scale. Unlike the depth rod on an ordinary caliper, the bridge sits across a wide face, so the instrument does not tip and the measurement stays repeatable.

Graduation is the first choice. 0.05 mm is enough for workshop work and for checking counterbores, while 0.02 mm belongs to fitting and assembly work where the depth sets the clearance. Versions with fine adjustment let the beam down under control and stop you pressing an extra hundredth in with your thumb.

Measuring range runs from 150 mm for toolroom work to 1000 mm for large fabricated parts. Do not take more range than you need, because a long beam deflects sooner and is awkward in a tight setup. Check the shape of the measuring face as well, since it decides whether you reach a flat bottom or get down into a narrow groove. The other analogue measuring instruments follow on from this; for rough lengths a tape measure is the right tool.
