Cultivating and gardening hand tools by task
Ground work still comes down to hand tools, and the right head shape saves more effort than brute force. A shovel lifts and moves loose material, a spade cuts clean edges in turf and soil, a hoe severs weeds at the root just below the surface, and a rake levels a seedbed or clears cuttings without disturbing what sits underneath. Heavier ground calls for a pickaxe or a manual earth auger, while a pitchfork handles bulky organic matter that a shovel simply slides off.
Shaft choice matters as much as the head. Fibreglass absorbs shock and survives being left outdoors, ash and hardwood have more give over a long day, and a T or D grip gives control when levering rather than lifting. Interchangeable systems let one shaft carry several heads, which cuts what has to be loaded into the van. Match the working width to the space between rows, and check overall length against the user's height so the back stays out of it.
