Toggle clamps and tensioners for jigs and fixtures

A toggle clamp locks a workpiece down through an over-centre linkage, so the same holding force is applied every cycle and released with one flick of the lever. That repeatability is why they end up on welding jigs, drilling fixtures, router templates and assembly benches, wherever a part has to sit in exactly the same place a hundred times a day.

Horizontal-handle types keep the lever clear of the tool path and suit low-clearance fixtures, while vertical types give more leverage in a small footprint. Holding forces here reach 2500 N, with clamping heights around 35 mm to 60 mm on the common sizes, so match the arm reach and the base plate to the fixture before you drill the mounting holes.

Plate and sheet tensioners work the other way round: they pull panel edges together for welding rather than pressing down onto a bench. For general benchwork a bench vice is still faster, and a machine vice takes over once the part goes under a drill or a mill.
