Adjustable tap wrenches for hand taps and reamers

A tap wrench is the hand tool you use to turn a hand tap or reamer to cut internal threads by hand in metal, plastic or wood. The square seat in the middle clamps the tap firmly, while the two arms give you enough leverage to start in a controlled, square manner. For repair, machine building and fine assembly, a tap wrench is indispensable when machine threading is too coarse or not available.

An adjustable model clamps onto different square sizes, so one wrench drives several tap sizes; brands such as Phantom and Facom supply versions to DIN 1814 with a wide clamping range. When choosing, look at the size range of the taps you use, here roughly from 8 to 16 mm, and at the length of the arms, because longer arms give more torque at larger diameters.

A smooth but firm clamping mechanism stops the tap slipping or pulling out of square. Choose hardened versions that keep their clamping force. This way you cut clean, straight threads without breaking the tap.
