Tap extensions for tapping in awkward spots

A tap extension bridges the distance between the tap and the machine or wrench holder, so you can cut thread in spots that would otherwise be out of reach. Deeply recessed holes, counterbored features and tight assemblies call for that extra reach without having to swap the tap itself. Toolmakers, machine builders and maintenance technicians use them in the workshop and on field repairs.

The extension clamps the tap on one side and offers a square drive on the other that fits common holders. When choosing, look at the tap size the piece clamps, the overall length and the version to the relevant standard, so tap and holder engage without play. A good clamp stops the tap slipping or running off line and damaging the thread.

Work with plenty of cutting oil and an even feed, so the thread comes out clean and the tap stays sharp. Pick a tap extension on the tap size and the reach your work demands, and threading awkward holes becomes straightforward.
