Strap wrenches that grip without marking

A strap wrench grips a round part with a band instead of jaws, so the surface stays intact. That is the whole point of the tool: polished, chromed or coated work, plastic filter housings and thin-walled tube can be tightened and broken loose without scoring, denting or distortion. The harder you pull on the handle, the tighter the band grips.

Two dimensions matter when choosing. Maximum diameter decides what still fits inside the band, here up to around 200 mm. Handle length, up to around 285 mm, sets the torque you reach and at the same time how much room you need to swing.

Then the band itself. Nylon is light and supple and leaves no marks on a finished surface. Heavier versions with an aluminium handle are meant for work on pipe, where the torque is higher. Check whether the band can be replaced on its own, because that is the part that wears and tears. Check that the band is clean before you lay it on as well, since one grain of grit between band and workpiece still scratches. The wider keys category sits one level up.
