Steel wire cable and cable sets for lifting equipment

Steel cable is the running rope in a winch, a hoist or a tensioned guide, and unlike a chain it coils onto a drum, which is why lifting equipment with any real travel uses it. Diameter comes first, because the drum, the sheave grooves and the rope have to be designed for one another, and an undersized rope in an oversized groove crushes itself flat within weeks. Construction is the second decision.

A rope with many fine wires bends easily and suits tight sheaves and repeated spooling, while a coarser lay resists abrasion and crushing on drag work. Right-hand and left-hand lay both exist, and mixing them on a multi-fall reeving makes the load spin. Galvanised wire holds up outdoors and in damp plant. Order by the metre for a repair, or take a made-up set with pressed end fittings when the termination has to be certified.

Inspect for broken wires, corrosion and birdcaging at every check. Where the lift is short and vertical a load chain is simpler, and a lifting sling handles the attachment to the load itself.
