Stand-off screws for mounting at an adjustable distance

A stand-off screw holds a component at an adjustable distance from the substrate. The fixing thread grips the part being mounted, the point thread grips the substrate, and by driving the screw further in or out you set the gap precisely. That is how decking boards, cladding, frames and support battens go on level without stacking packers under them.

Take the length from the sum of the build up height, the gap you want and the embedment depth required in the substrate. Electrolytically zinc plated steel is enough indoors, while A2 stainless steel is the norm as soon as the joint sits outside or sees moisture. Watch the head shape as well: a cylinder head with a star drive does not cam out under a high tightening torque, and that counts in adjustable work because you reset the screw more than once.

Self-drilling versions cut their own hole in the substrate and save pre-drilling on repetitive work, which matters when a whole deck or a full run of cladding goes down in a day. For continuous timber joints without a spacing function go to timber construction screws; the full overview sits under screws.
