Spherical roller thrust bearings with pressed or solid cage

A spherical roller thrust bearing carries very high axial load in one direction and tolerates misalignment between the parts while it does so. The barrel-shaped rollers run on a spherical raceway in the housing washer, so the load stays spread over the full roller length even when the shaft does not sit square. That makes the type suitable for crane hooks, extruders, presses and rolling mills, agitators and vertical shaft arrangements where the weight of the rotor rests on the bearing.

Two cage versions occur within the SKF range. A pressed steel cage is lighter and common in the smaller bores. A solid metal cage holds its shape at higher speeds, under heavy shock load and in hot running conditions. Bores in this segment run from roughly 39 mm to 320 mm, so measure the shaft and the housing bore before you fix a size.

The type needs a minimum axial preload, otherwise the rollers slide instead of rolling, and it is sensitive to being run short of lubricant. If the application carries a lighter load, look within the axial range at a thrust ball bearing with a lower section height.
