Axial thrust ball bearings, single acting

A thrust ball bearing takes load that acts along the shaft. The balls run between a shaft washer and a housing washer, so the assembly carries high axial forces but takes no radial force at all. That is why you find it in turntables, spindles, screw jacks, crane hooks and drives where the pressure stands squarely on the shaft. Single acting versions take that force in one direction. If the shaft is loaded in both directions, you need a double acting arrangement or a second bearing opposing the first.

Size follows from the bore, the outside diameter and the height, and all three have to fit the space the design leaves free. Common bores run from 17 to 140 mm, with outside dimensions up to around 300 mm. At assembly, watch for flat, squarely machined support faces and enough preload. An axial bearing that is loaded too lightly lets the balls slide instead of roll, which damages the raceway.
