Radial shaft seals for oil and grease retention

An oil seal closes the gap between a rotating shaft and a fixed housing, keeping lubricant in and dirt, water and dust out. It is specified by three dimensions, shaft diameter, bore diameter and width, and all three have to match the housing exactly, because a seal that is close is a seal that leaks. The outer diameter comes in two constructions: a metal housing presses into a rigid bore and holds its shape under interference, while a rubber outer diameter compensates for a bore that is worn, split or made of light alloy with a different thermal expansion.

Lip design is the second choice. A single lip retains oil or grease where the environment is clean; a second, non-contacting lip shields the primary lip from dust and spray in outdoor, agricultural and construction duty. Shaft finish, hardness and runout matter as much as the seal itself, and a shaft groove worn by an earlier seal will destroy a new one within hours.

Part of the wider sealing rings range, oil seals work alongside a V ring as a secondary exclusion device.
