Self-drilling screws for fixing without pre-drilling

A self-drilling screw carries its own drill point, so it cuts the pilot hole and forms the thread in one pass. That removes a tool change on steel studwork, thin sheet, roofing and board fixing, and it keeps the hole diameter matched to the thread every time.

Match the drill point to the material thickness first. A short point suits thin sheet and will strip if it spins in heavier steel, while a longer point clears the swarf from thicker sections before the thread engages. Lengths run from around 9 mm for sheet-to-sheet work up to 70 mm where insulation or a batten sits under the fixing. Head style then follows the finish: a countersunk head pulls flush into board, while a ball head leaves a fixing point for wire, hooks or suspended services.

Collated strips for a screwdriver attachment pay off on repetitive runs, and a matched bit keeps cam-out under control. Part of the wider screws range, next to the chipboard screw options for timber and panel work.
