Sanding rolls for wood, metal and paint

A sanding roll is abrasive supplied by length instead of cut to size. You tear or cut off what you need, which leaves almost no offcut and puts one item on the shelf for strips, blocks and hand sanding. Rolls up to 50 m are common, in widths from 25 to 120 mm, so there are narrow strips for profiles as well as wide runs for flat parts.

Grit decides the result. Grit 40 to 80 is coarse work: stripping paint, levelling weld seams, bringing timber to shape. Grit 100 to 180 is the intermediate step for most surfaces, and grit 240 to 400 is for the fine work before and between coats of paint. Never skip more than one grit step, or the scratches from the previous stage come back through the finish.

Look as well at the backing and the bond: paper for flat work, cloth where the roll has to bend or is used wet, and a stearate coating to limit clogging on paint. Related products sit under sanding, sharpening, polishing and deburring.
