Ring spanner sets for tight bolts and nuts

A ring spanner set gives you a full run of closed-head spanners in rising sizes, so the right one is to hand at every bolt and nut size. The closed head encloses the hexagon completely and spreads the force over all six corners. That saves rounded flats on a seized joint and gives more grip than an open-ended spanner.

Watch the size range when you choose: sets run from the smallest sizes up to 32 mm or 34 mm, so check which sizes come round most often in your work. The head shape differs as well. A recessed or offset head gives clearance for your knuckles on a flat surface, while a flat version comes into its own in a tight space. Twelve-point rings engage in more positions, six-point rings give maximum grip at high torque.

A holder or foam inlay keeps the sizes in order and shows at a glance which spanner is missing. If you work more often with a combined ring and open end, look at the combination spanner sets; the overview of all spanner sets sits one level up.
