Polishing wheels from pre-polishing to a high gloss
A polishing wheel brings metal, plastic or a painted surface to the gloss level you want. The wheel carries the compound, and the material of the wheel decides how aggressively that compound works. Felt is hard and holds its shape, keeps a sharp edge and suits pre-polishing and removing fine grinding marks. Sisal cuts harder and clears scratches and oxidation. Cotton cloth and fleece are soft, follow convex shapes and give the final gloss without leaving new marks behind.
Work from coarse to fine and keep a separate wheel for each compound. Residue from a coarser step otherwise keeps scratching during the finishing step, and that costs more time than the extra wheel. Check the outside diameter and the bore so the wheel runs without play on the polishing motor or the angle grinder. Diameters of 150 mm and 200 mm are common, with bores such as 10 mm and 20 mm.
For the preparation work look at sanding, sharpening, polishing and deburring. Heavy stock comes off first with a fibre disc.
