Polishing pads, felt wheels and fleece discs

A polishing disc carries the compound and controls how hard it works, so the same paste can cut or refine depending on what sits behind it. Wool and lambskin pads cut fastest and clear sanding scratches from paint and metal, felt wheels concentrate pressure on edges, moulds and small radii, and fleece finishes soft, taking out haze without leaving swirl marks of its own.

Diameter is set by the machine. Around 125 mm to 180 mm suits handheld polishers and angle grinders, while the larger sizes belong on floor machines and rotary buffers, where coverage matters more than control. Check the fixing too, because velcro backing, threaded spindles and plain arbor holes are not interchangeable.

Work through a sequence and keep the speed down, since heat is what burns a finish and softens a compound before it has done its job. Surface preparation comes first with a sanding disc, and the wider sanding, sharpening, polishing and deburring range holds the abrasives used before the polish.
