L-keys and handled keys for hex and Torx screws

Facom Keep On Rolling

A pin key drives screws with an internal profile: internal hex and Torx. The tool is no more than a hardened bar with the profile on the end, and that is exactly its strength. It reaches bolts where no socket and no open-ended spanner can get.

Size is critical. A key that is slightly too small rounds out the recess in the screw, and then the joint is a real problem. Torx sizes sit close together in steps such as T25, T27, T30 and T40, so check the profile before you apply force, certainly on a screw that has been out before.

The handle decides how much torque you can apply and how fast you turn. An L-shaped version gives the most leverage through the long leg and still fits in tight space. A P handle or a T handle sits better in the hand, turns faster on long screws and takes two hands. Lengths run from around 40 mm to 200 mm, so a longer version reaches deeply recessed screws on machines. The wider keys category sits one level up, including the nut driver.
