Due to their thin horny layer, human lips are quite sensitive to outside influences.
The lips, as well as forehead, nose and ears, belong to the so-called sun terraces and cannot protect themselves against UV radiation by tanning.
The second protective mechanism is inapplicable as well, as no light callosities evolve on the lips.
