Saw chains for cordless and petrol chainsaws

A saw chain is matched to the bar and the sprocket by three figures, and all three have to agree: pitch, gauge and drive link count. Pitch is the spacing between rivets, commonly 3/8" low profile or 1/4" on compact cordless machines. Gauge is the drive link thickness, usually 1.1 or 1.3 mm, and it has to fit the bar groove or the chain wanders and heats.

Drive link count is fixed by bar length, so a 30 cm bar and a 40 cm bar never share a chain even at the same pitch. Cutter form is the last choice. Low kickback semi chisel holds an edge in dirty or frozen timber and suits occasional work, while full chisel cuts faster in clean softwood and asks for more frequent filing. Check tension cold, keep the bar groove and oil hole clear, and run a spare so one chain is always sharp.

When the work moves from felling to the bench a circular saw blade takes over, and the wider sawing and cutting consumables cover the rest of the cutting work.
