Keyhole saws and jab saws for cut outs and pockets
A keyhole saw starts its own cut. The narrow tapered blade drops through a drilled pilot hole or is punched straight into plasterboard, then works a socket box, downlight or pipe penetration to shape with no power tool anywhere near the cable run behind the sheet.
Tooth geometry decides the finish. Triple ground and universal teeth clear plasterboard and chipboard fast at 7 to 9 TPI, while finer hardened teeth stay sharp in plastic, laminate and softwood.
Blade length runs from about 150 mm for confined cut outs up to 355 mm for deeper reach through insulation and stud walls, and a folding pattern protects the point in a tool bag. Look for an induction hardened edge that survives the odd screw, a grip that lets you steer a curve one handed, and a blade stiff enough that it does not wander on the pull stroke. For long straight cuts across a board a hand saw is faster and truer, and a bow saw handles green timber and branch work.
