Threaded hose tails for air, water and suction lines

A hose tail converts a threaded port into a barbed spigot, so flexible hose can be pushed on and secured with a clip instead of screwed. It is the usual join between rigid pipework and a compressed air line, a suction hose or a wash-down lance, and it is the part that decides whether the connection holds under pressure.

Both dimensions have to agree. The thread must match the port, typically 1/4", 3/8" or 1/2" male, and the barb must match the hose bore, commonly 6 mm, 9 mm or 13 mm. Undersize the barb and the clip crushes the hose without sealing; oversize it and the hose splits as it is forced on. Larger barbs from 19 mm to 25 mm suit suction and drainage lines where flow matters more than pressure.

Seal the thread with tape or paste, and use a proper worm-drive or ear clip rather than wire. Hose tails sit with the other threaded couplings; where two threaded parts meet directly with no hose between them, a double nipple is the fitting you want.
