Hand taps for metric thread and BSP gas thread

A hand tap cuts internal thread in a pre-drilled hole and is driven by hand through a tap wrench. That makes it the tool for assembly and repair work where no machine can reach: chasing thread in a dirty hole, restoring a damaged thread, or cutting thread in a part that is already mounted. Versions in HSS hold their cutting edge in steel, cast iron and non-ferrous metal.

Choose the thread form first. Metric to ISO 529 covers most machine building and maintenance work, while BSP gas thread belongs with pipe and fitting work. The diameter of the pre-drilled hole comes next, because a hole that is too tight loads the tap heavily and snaps it. Work through the set in stages rather than forcing the first tap to full size, and use cutting oil.

Phantom, Facom, Milwaukee, International Tools and HiKOKI cover the size range together. For threading on a machine, a machine tap is faster and holds size better. For external thread on a shaft or a bolt, a thread cutting die belongs in the box.
