Grinding rolls for deburring and surface finishing

A grinding roll is a bonded abrasive body that runs on a mandrel in a straight grinder or on a flexible shaft. Unlike a belt or a disc, the roll wears evenly over its whole length, so the grain keeps working consistently and you can work in bores, in grooves and along profiles without the body losing its shape.

Shape decides the reach. A cylindrical roll works flat along a wall and keeps a straight edge straight. A conical roll gets into corners and transitions where a cylinder jams, and a tapered cone is meant for easing radii. Pick the diameter from the smallest internal dimension you have to enter, and the length from the zone you want to cover in one continuous pass.

Grain and bore follow. Corundum is the usual abrasive for deburring and for taking off weld spatter in steel. A coarser grain removes material faster and leaves a rougher surface, a finer grain leaves a smoother one and suits preparing for a polishing step. The 3 mm or 5 mm bore has to match the mandrel fitted in the machine. Within sanding, sharpening, polishing and deburring the sanding roll is the related choice for flatter work.
