Flap discs for grinding, blending and weld dressing

A flap disc removes stock and leaves a blended finish in one pass, which is why it has largely replaced the grinding wheel plus separate sanding step on steel and stainless steel fabrication. Overlapping abrasive flaps wear back gradually and keep exposing fresh grain, so cutting speed stays stable instead of falling away as a rigid wheel glazes over.

Pick the diameter to match the grinder: 115 mm and 125 mm cover most handheld work, while 180 mm suits heavy weld dressing on larger frames. Check the bore, usually 22.23 mm, and the maximum speed marked on the backing plate before fitting anything. Grit choice follows the job, coarse for weld caps and heavy burrs, medium for levelling, fine for a surface ready to paint or polish. A flat disc works along its face for levelling, while conical shapes bite better on edges and fillet welds.

Flap discs belong to the sanding, sharpening, polishing and deburring range, next to the sanding disc for lighter surface work.
