File sets for metal, wood and plastic

A file set covers in one go the shapes that keep coming back in hand finishing. The flat file levels a surface and squares an edge, the half-round follows convex and concave transitions, the round file cleans up bores, and the three-square reaches internal corners where a flat file jams.

Choose the cut on the work you do. Bastard is the coarsest and takes off weld beads, burrs and excess, second cut brings the shape accurately to size, and smooth leaves the finished face without deep scratches.

On metal, work in short controlled strokes and lift slightly on the return. On wood and plastic the pressure can be higher, but clear the cut more often to stop it clogging.

File length decides how much material goes per stroke. Short works precisely, long works flat. Sets supplied with handles sit more steadily in the hand and keep the tang out of your palm.
