Damp-proofing and waterproofing for walls

Damp-proofing interrupts the path water takes through masonry. Rising damp comes up out of the ground through the capillaries in brick and joint, and sealing the inside face of the wall does not solve it, because the problem then simply moves higher up. A chemical damp barrier tackles the cause by making the capillaries themselves water repellent. That is done with an injection gel or with sticks that you place in a row of drilled holes low in the wall.

The product draws into the pores, cures and forms a continuous horizontal barrier. Hole spacing, drilling depth and the dose per running metre depend on the wall thickness and the build-up of the masonry, so measure those before working out the quantity. Cellar and retaining walls under water pressure from outside need something else: a polymer cement coating or a barrier that stays put against that pressure.

If cracks and voids have to be repaired before the barrier goes in, look at filling compound. Other treatments for stone and concrete sit under other surface treatment.
