Collets and clamping nuts for round tool shanks

A collet grips the round shank of a cutter by closing evenly around it, and the accuracy of that grip sets the runout, the finish and the working life of the tool. Shank sizes here cover 3, 6, 6.35, 8 and 12.7 mm, so imperial and metric cutters both have a home, but the collet has to match the machine as well as the shank. The tapered seat is machine-specific, and forcing a near-fit distorts the sleeve and marks the spindle.

Fit the collet into the nut first, then thread the assembly on, and never tighten an empty seat, which is what cracks them. Insert the shank to the full clamping length rather than leaving it hanging out for reach, since overhang multiplies deflection and chatter. Wear shows as burn marks and a cutter that creeps out under load, and at that point replacement costs far less than the workpiece.

For hole saws and other shank-mounted accessories, the matching arbor or hole saw arbor does the same job at a larger diameter.
