Cold and bodywork chisels for cutting, shearing and dressing

A chisel converts hammer blows into a shearing edge, and the grade of steel behind that edge is what separates a tool that holds its bevel from one that mushrooms in an afternoon. Cold patterns take on rivets, bolt heads, sheet steel and weld spatter, where the cut has to start without a pilot hole. Flat and bodywork patterns are ground thinner so they slide under a panel or a seam and part it without deforming the metal either side.

Length sets both the reach and the safety margin: 200 mm keeps control on light work, 300 mm gets you behind an obstruction and further from the hammer. Cutting widths from 12 to 27 mm let you match the edge to the joint rather than the joint to the edge. A moulded hand guard is worth having on repeat work, since it absorbs the near miss that would otherwise land on your knuckles.

Dress the struck end as soon as it starts to spread, and reach for a crowbar when the job is prying rather than cutting, or a wood chisel for timber.
