Chain wrench for heavy pipe work

A chain wrench grips round workpieces with a steel chain, so you can turn pipes and round stock without the grip slipping off. That lets you tackle large and irregular diameters where a fixed jaw falls short. The chain closes tightly around the workpiece and the toothed head turns the force into torque, even on greasy or wet surfaces.

A chain wrench or chain tong is therefore the choice for heavy pipe and tubing work in installation and maintenance. Versions differ in the maximum pipe diameter the chain spans and in the length of the handle for more leverage. Choose a heavy-duty model for seized connections and large diameters, and a lighter model for regular work.

Watch the gripping capacity, the quality of the chain and a handle that passes force on comfortably. A double-ended version engages faster in both turning directions. Brands such as Ridgid, Bahco, Gedore and Facom supply chain wrenches for plumbers and fitters. That way you turn every pipe loose under control, however tight it sits.
