Manual and powered chain hoists for lifting loads

A chain hoist raises, lowers and holds a load on a calibrated load chain, with a brake that grips the moment the operator stops pulling. Hand-operated versions need no power supply and suit workshop lifts, plant maintenance and site work where a load has to be positioned slowly and precisely. Battery and mains-driven versions take over when the same lift is repeated all day and pulling hand chain becomes the bottleneck.

Start from the working load limit and leave margin, because the rating assumes a straight vertical pull and nothing else. Lift height sets the chain length, and standard builds cover the usual short drops with longer chains available for pits and gantries. Headroom between the hook and the load matters in a low bay, so check the closed dimension before committing.

Then confirm the suspension, since a plain top hook, a push trolley and a fixed eye each demand a different mounting. Where the job is jacking rather than lifting, a jack or a hydraulic lifting cylinder does it with less setup.
