Cable reels for temporary mains supply at the workface

A cable reel carries mains supply to where the work is, and the specification that matters most is the conductor cross-section against the length you unwind. Drums here run from 12 to 40 m, wired for 230V at 16A, and a heavier core keeps voltage drop low so a saw or a compressor still starts cleanly at full extension. Always unwind fully under sustained load: a coiled drum traps heat, and a thermal cut-out will trip long before the job is finished.

Look for a rubber or polymer frame that survives being dropped, sockets with sprung flaps against dust and water ingress, and a locking swivel if the drum sits on a stand. Wall-mounted retracting designs suit fixed bays and workshop lanes, where a trailing lead across a walkway is the real hazard. Choose the conductor and jacket from the cable and wire range when you make up your own drums, or take an extension lead where a short run and quick coiling matter more than drum capacity.
