Blind rivets for fastening from one side

Blind rivets make a permanent joint where you can only reach one side of the workpiece. The rivet goes through the pre-drilled holes, the mandrel deforms the sleeve on the far side into a closing head and snaps off. The result is vibration-proof, never needs re-tightening and works on thin sheet where a thread finds nothing to hold.

The choice starts with the material. Aluminium with a steel mandrel is the common combination: light, quick to set and inexpensive. As soon as the joint sits outdoors or against another metal, material choice matters more, because two dissimilar metals in contact start corrosion.

Size comes next. The diameter, here 4 mm and 4.8 mm, has to suit the drilled hole: too loose and the rivet does not pull up, too tight and it will not go in. The grip range has to cover the total thickness of the stack, and lengths here run up to 30 mm. A flat head spreads the load over a larger area, which counts on thin or soft sheet. Rivet nuts and setting tools sit under blind rivets and nuts.
